CSOs commend JAMB’s effort to carter for candidates with special needs

Civil society and religious based organisations have commended the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for policies and programmes it has put in place to ensure transparency and efficiency in her operations.

The groups made up of Civil Society and Community Based organisations particularly lauded the Board for not only being prudent in the management of resources that has seen it remit N7billion to the government coffers but taking steps to carter for candidates with special needs.

In a communique issued at the end of a two day annual retreat, with the theme “Reviewing and Reappraising Nigeria’s’  educational trajectory; Focus on joint Admissions and Matriculation Board As A Bridge to Tertiary Education in Nigeria”, that the Board under the current management has indeed embraced and all stakeholders in the running of its affairs.

The Communiqué jointly signed by Solomon Semaka, Convener, Babatunde Otumala for CSOs, Jonah Otunla for Student bodies, Sheik Abdulrazak for Muslim community, Rev Pius Adesami for CAN, commended management of JAMB and encourage her to maintain the tempo while also delivering on her mandate.

The communiqué made available to Blueprint yesterday in Abuja, reads in part; “Council observed that even though the mandate of JAMB is not to generate revenue, the current management through her ingenuity has been able to utilize her fund meant for logistics and remitted  same to government coffers. Remarks: council noted that this is the first of its kind in the Boards history for such an amount (Seven Billion Naira) to be saved by the Board.

“Council also observed that previous managements of JAMB had charged foreign applicants $100 for application fees whereas current management of JAMB has reduced the fees to a paltry $20 across board. Remarks: Council notes and appreciate that gesture and further seek its continued implementation.

“Council appreciate the efforts of the current JAMB management to put in place modalities to take care of applicants with special needs. Remarks:Council appreciate JAMB and the Prof Peter Okebukola committee for her work in ensuring special needs applicants also have equal opportunities to seek tertiary education.”
