The Bauchi State Network of Civil Society Organizations (BASNEC) has charged women in the state to join the effort of countering violent extremism with a view to ensuring peaceful coexistence among all citizens of the state.
Chairman of the network Mr Jinjiri Garba gave the charge Thursday at a community dialogue on conflict management organized for women drawn from various organizations in the state by BASNEC in collaboration with Global Centre on Co-operative Society and Carefronting Nigeria.
He explained that the dialogue was aimed at enlightening the women on their role as mothers in preventing their children from formenting violence in the society.
“Women are being encouraged to champion the course of preventing violent extremism and promoting peaceful coexistence among heterogeneous citizens living in the state.
“So we expect the women to be peace ambassadors in their respective communities and organizations for socio-economic development of the state”. He said.
Also speaking, the state director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) Alhaji Nuru Kobi also advocated active involvement of women in policies and programs on peace and countering extremism stressing that they are critical stakeholders.
He opined that some of the causes of violent extremism among youth include unemployment, lack of tolerance and social injustice among others.
