‘Cup loss won’t hurt NPFL chances’

Lobi Stars captain and central defender Anthony Agbaji says their Gold Cup loss will count for nothing when the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) starts in January.
The Pride of Benue were beaten 0-1 by the former Nigerian champions, Kano Pillars, in the Gold Cup final on Friday at the Kwara State Stadium in llorin.
Agbaji said the fact the side were able to take their Gold Cup title defence to the final showed the stuff the Makurdi side were made of.
“Our participation in the just concluded 2017 pre-season tournament in llorin, Kwara state, was a worthwhile exercise.
“As defending champions going as far as the final is something to be happy and proud about, it equally showed our capability and strength.
“We lost to a good side in the final. We were not disgraced.
“It was a good tournament and even though we failed to defend the title we achieved a lot as the new players in our midst showed promise.
“The Gold Cup loss will count for nothing when the new league season commences in January.
“The Gold Cup is a pre-season tournament only. We are going to be better and stronger when the top-flight season starts.
“We are still rebuilding for the new league season and I’m confident we will get it right in time for the new season,” said the Lobi Stars strongman to supersport.com.
