The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has raised fresh alarm over plot to derail the 2023 elections.

The Coalition also condemned in very strong terms the very loud silence of the security agencies in finding those who compromised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voters’ register, described as Omuma Magic.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Monday, the Spokesman of CUPP, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, called on the Director General of Directorate of State Security, Yusuf Bichi Magaji and the Inspector General of Police, Alkali Usman Baba to show more than verbal commitment to the electoral process by ensuring the prosecution of the politicians involved in the Omuma Magic despite their political leanings and how highly placed they may seem.

He noted that the plot to remove the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Yakubu Mahmood is still alive.

He said: “We condemn in very strong terms the very loud silence of the security agencies in finding those who perpetrated the Omuma Magic and holding them to account and the attempts by the State Security Services and the Nigerian Police to distract Nigerians by arresting, torturing, and charging innocent staff of the Commission, who we heard some of them have now been discharged by the court.

“If Nigerians are to take the security agencies seriously, the Inspector General of Police and the Director General of the SSS must not allow factual allegations of crime against the electoral process to go without action.

“Compromising the voters’ register is a crime, as provided in the Electoral Act, with a punishment of One-year Imprisonment, so the security agencies must not keep quiet.

“We call on the DG SSS and the IG of Police to show more than verbal commitment to this electoral process by ensuring the prosecution of the politicians involved in the Omuma Magic despite their political leanings and how highly placed they may seem. Such silence from the security agencies impugns the neutrality of the security agencies.”

On the threat to remove INEC Chairman, CUPP said, “we shall further inform Nigerians that there are still live threats to the 2023 elections. Despite President Muhammadu Buhari’s verbal commitments that there was no plan to sack the INEC Chairman, that dastardly plot is still, unfortunately, alive and kicking even harder now within his party. There is still a plot to sack the INEC Chairman to frustrate the use of the BVAS machine and the cleaning up of the register.

“It is for this purpose that the Nigerian opposition and, indeed, all Nigerian citizens of goodwill have resolved that we shall resist and reject any form of the arrest of the INEC Chairman when he returns to the country (he is currently outside the country).

“We shall also vehemently resist and reject every form of resignation from office by the INEC Chairman, either forced or otherwise, or any other form or method of removal from office, as the Omuma Magic initiators now speak more boastfully and assuredly than before.”
