Curtains fall on AFFAN sports tourney

The #GirlsRGame competition organised by the Association of Former Female Athletes (AFFAN) climaxed to a great spectacle at the Government Girls Secondary School Dutse, Abuja on Thursday.

The three-day competition aimed at mentoring and empowering girls through sports featured over 50 students across four departments who participated in Volleyball, Basketball and Football.

The Inter-departmental competition saw Humanities clinch the gold medal in Football with Languages and Vocation/Technology departments coming in second and third place respectively.

The Science department, however was not able to make it to the medals table.

Thrilled by the performance of the students, Dr. Toyin Aluko, president of AFFAN and handball veteran said the organization would send a handball coach to the school to revive the game.

“We are thankful that the event was successful and the aim to discover athletes and empower them through sports was achieved.

“In the three sports participated in, we were able to discover valuable players who were presented with awards.

“The idea is to mentor and empower girls and to give back to the society because we all have benefited from doing sports in one form or the other.

“We also noticed that the school do not have a handball team. We will be sending a coach here to revive the game in the school,” Aluko said.
