Customer sues electricity distribution coy over ‘exorbitant bills’

A customer who is also former Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the National Association of Social Work Students (NASoWS) at the University of Jos, Henry Chike Okonkwo, has dragged the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) to court over alleged exorbitant estimated bills.

The customer, in a letter by his counsel, moved the motion on notice before the High Court 2 in Jos on June 29, this year, after series of failed efforts at getting his light reconnected.

Okonkwo, through his counsel, had on January 27, this year, requested in an affidavit to support his motion on notice for the reconnection of his light by the JEDC.

The customer dragged the electricity company to court for the consumption of electricity via an electronic meter which he claimed to be functioning, but that JEDC failed to pick the readings of the meter before he was billed.

Okonkwo was said to have sought dialogue with a feeder manager in charge of his district on the issue but effort proved abortive as he insisted that he would need a prepaid meter as an alternative.

The customer was reportedly asked to pay the bills immediately or be disconnected which prompted his written and served on the JEDC on May 10, 2019, which the company was said to have ignored and gone ahead with their threat of disconnection.

A reminder letter was said to have been written by the customer and served to the company on May 28, 2019, but the company also failed to respond before the matter was instituted in the court.
