The number of missing athletes from Team Nigeria to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games that ended on Sunday night have increased from one to three by the time the team arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Wednesday evening.
Team Nigeria went to the games with 90 athletes of ten sports and they won a total of 24 medals comprising of nine gold, nine silver and six bronze medals.
However, as earlier reported by Blueprint sport in our yesterday’s edition ,the disappearance of Isoken Igbinosun, a sprinter from the camp of the team in Gold Coast.
Sources inside Team Nigeria camp disclosed to us that two more athletes are currently missing. The source said, “I don’t want to mention their names but I know two athletes have gone missing again.”
“It’s not because the athletes do not love Nigeria, but they made the move to better their careers. Even if they come to Nigeria, all they’ll receive is a presidential handshake, nothing more,” the source said.
“I won’t mention names yet, that would be the job of the Federal Ministry of Sports as well as the Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC,” said the source.
Few days ago, Team Nigeria dismissed as baseless and disrespectful allegations that Australia’s Border Police have decided to mount a close watch on its athletes at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Gold Coast.
Secretary General of Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC, Honourable Tunde Popoola who was livid sneered at the report describing it as baseless and disrespectful.
He said, “Records show (verify at CGF) that Team Nigeria remain the only country that has submitted a detailed departure schedule on the movement of its team”.
“For now, we concentrate on supporting our athletes in winning more medals to the glory of our fatherland and will not want to be distracted” Popoola said.
