Data protection critical to Nigeria’s innovative, digital drive—NITDA DG

National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has described data protection as critical part of the country’s move for new economic paradigm that protects the innovative and hardworking Nigerians.

Director-general of NITDA Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi who was speaking at the NITDA workshop for Data Protection Officers (DPO’s) and focal persons in Abuja, Thursday, stated that, “Data Protection officers are the true harbingers of data protection compliance.
This workshop is organized as part of our strategic engagement to deepen the implementation of the NDPR and the Nigeria Data Protection Bill, 2020 which is currently under consultation.

On 25th January, 2019, the current Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, as the then Director General of NITDA, issued the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) pursuant to Section 6(a, c) of the NITDA Act, 2007. This visionary move has become a game changer for the digital economic aspirations of Nigeria,” he said.
He added that, “Data Protection falls under Developmental Regulation – the first pillar of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS: 2019). This shows the critical place it holds in our desire for a brand new economic paradigm that works for the innovative and hardworking mass of Nigerians.”
