Davis Cup: Akindoju ecstatic as Team

Nigeria get off to winning start
President of Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF) Ifedayo Akindoju was full of joy and further expectations following Team Nigeria’s great start at the ongoing Davis Cup tournament in Kenya. The Nigeria team won all three matches against Rwanda yesterday.

They will also face Benin Republic and Cameroon in Pool A of the Africa Zone Group three.

In the first match, Sylvester Emmanuel defeated Rwanda’s Ernest Habiyambere 6-1 7-5 before Nigeria’s top seed Joseph Imeh thrashed Rwanda’s captain, Olivier Havugimana 6-0 6-1 in 48 minutes.

Nigeria thereafter took a 3-0 lead after the aforementioned Imeh teamed up with Christian Paul to beat the duo of Hamissi Gatete and Etienne Niyigena in two straight sets of 6-1, 6-2 in the doubles event.

The race puts Team Nigeria in a fantastic position to win the pool thus standing a chance to gain promotion from Group three to Group two.
