Defeat insurgents, justify your appointment, NYCN urges new service chiefs

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has urged the newly appointed service chiefs to reciprocate the confidence reposed on them by President Muhammadu Buhari by building on the efforts made by their predecessors in the fight against insurgency, banditry and other violent crimes going on in the country.

A statement signed by the president of NYCN, Solomon Adodo, also commended President Buhari for yielding to the popular call for the replacement of the service chiefs which is expected will bring fresh impetus in the security architecture.

The umbrella youth body charged the appointees to be loyal and dedicated in the discharge of their responsibilities.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday approved the appointment of Major-General Leo Irabor as Chief of Defence Staff; Major-General I. Attahiru, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral A.Z Gambo, Chief of Naval Staff; and Air-Vice Marshal I.O Amao, Chief of Air Staff, following the resignation of the previous service chiefs.

“The outgoing service chiefs have no doubt done their best in the fight against insurgency, banditry and other crimes. However, leadership is a continuum and as such it is only proper that others be given an opportunity to bring new ideas that will further boost the efforts of ridding the nation from the hold of insurgents and bandits.

“This has been the view of many security experts and several other public affairs commentators. Hence, we commend President Muhammadu Buhari for taking the bold step to appoint fresh hands to rejig the security architecture particularly at a time criminals appear to be emboldened in their nefarious activities.

“We herein also sue for cooperation from the rank and file of the military and all Nigerians to rally round the newly appointed service chiefs to deliver on the huge task of salvaging the country from the shackles of violent criminals. We have no doubt that our military possess the right credentials to contend and protect the territorial integrity of the nation and its people and the newly appointed service chiefs are fit to lead in this regard,” the statement noted.
