Delta LG polls: DSIEC officials, others arrested for ‘electoral fraud’

Delta state police command has arrested two officials of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC), including William Oyiboka and Glory Ugbi, for their alleged involvement in electoral fraud in the recent council’s election.
The suspects, it was gathered, were in possession of sensitive election materials for collation of results for Isoko South council, but disappeared without the knowledge of the electoral officer and later re-appeared without the materials, claiming that the materials were snatched by thugs.

Acting Public Relations Officer of the command, ASP Roland Preston, who confirmed the arrest, said “the suspects were undergoing investigation.”

Preston also said a 25-year-old man, Alex Obukowho, had been arrested for allegedly engaging in electoral violence as well as the recovery of vehicles in Warri axis of the state.
“Obukowho was one of the thugs that invaded units 15, 16, 17 and 19 at Orhuwohorun Primary School in Ovwian Aladja, while accreditation was going on in last Saturday’s election,” he said.
However, he said the thugs numbering over 5o and armed with battle axes, cutlasses and gallons of fuel, chased away DSIEC officials and voters, and also destroyed some electoral materials.

On the vehicles recovered, the spokesman said another set of thugs had trailed a bus conveying election materials meant for distribution to wards in Okorede Urhodo and Ogunu communities.
