Delta: Youth set police van ablaze over death of mother, 4-month old baby

Pandemonium occurred Wednesday in Warri, Delta state as angry youth set police van ablaze for causing death of mother and a four-month old baby.

The police attached to Ebrumede divisional headquarters hit a tricycle conveying a mother and 4-month baby leading to their untimely death at Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) junction, Warri Delta state.

It was gathered that the police while allegedly chasing after suspected yahoo boys, hit a tricycle conveying a woman and her baby, killing them on the spot.

Miffed by the incident, irate youth set the police van ablaze to drive home their grievance against the police.

According to an eyewitness, “The Police van hit a keke conveying mother and child, killing both of them while chasing suspected yahoo boys, and thus angry youth set the police van ablaze.”

Contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, said it was a 911 that rammed into the tricycle and not the police van as reported.

According to the PPRO , “That is not true, they said a tipper hit a keke (tricycle), that was carrying a woman and a young child. There was an accident, so they are trying to link it to the police. The police did not crush anybody or shot at anybody.”
