A legislative assistant with the National Assembly, Abubakar Doki, said to be working with the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yusuf Lasun, yesterday collapsed and died at the National Assembly premises.
The deceased, in his early 50s, was until his death a Senior Legislative Aide (SLA) attached to Lasun’s office, and was reported to have fallen ill in the early hours of Monday and rushed to the National Assembly clinic for medical attention, where he was told his case was beyond the capacity of the clinic, and was advised to seek treatment outside.
The late Doki reportedly brought by his son whose name could not be immediately ascertained was said to have collapsed on his way out of the National Assembly complex, prompting security operatives including National Assembly Sergeant-At-Arm personnel and bystanders to rush to his aid.
A senior medical staff with the Assembly clinic who spoke on condition of anonymity said “the deceased came to the clinic for treatment, but had to be referred since his condition was already critical.”
On what the nature of ailment was, the source said it couldn’t be ascertained since there was no diagnosis carried out.
“Sick staff who can’t access treatment at the clinic due to the complexity of their cases usually come referral notes to government hospitals outside,” the source said.
Doki, who hailed from Bungudu in Zamfara state, was, according to National Assembly records, employed under the office of the Deputy Speaker as a Senior Legislative Aide.
