Desertification: Gombe begins planting of 4m trees

In an effort to tackle desertification and other environmental challenges, Gombe state government has commenced planting of four million trees across the state.

The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, Mr. Samaila Uba Misilli, disclosed this to Journalists in Gombe.

He said the pilot planting of 1 Million trees has commenced with over 13 thousand already planted in Gombe metropolis and environs.

He said: “The program tagged Gombe Goes Green (3G) is an initiative of Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s administration to plant 1 million trees yearly aimed at tackling desertification and other environmental challenges.

“The environmental challenges in Gombe state are not limited to desertification. The state is also prone to erosion problem, especially in the Gombe metropolis, the planting of more trees is aimed at arresting the situation.

“Already 11 Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have been recruited to commence the work in 11 sites across Gombe local government area in accordance with international best practice.

“It would be recalled that Governor Inuwa Yahaya had recently vowed to embark on massive tree planting in the state as a strategic measure to counter the tragedy of desertification and flooding which pose threats to the lives of residents in various communities as well as infrastructures like roads and bridges in the state.

“With the approval of the state Governor, the first component of the project has kick-started with tree planting campaign in residential areas, public places and schools as well as to sensitize residents on the need and benefit of tree planting.

“Under the 3G program, the Government will employ about 27 thousand youths, who will be paid N7,500 each monthly to nurse and watch over the trees as well as make sure they survive and grow.” He said.
