The Ijumu Anglican Diocese, Church of Nigeria, in Ijumu local government area of Kogi state has charged Nigerians to use their resources for the service of God and humanity in order to make the society a better place for all.
Bishop of Ijumu Diocese, Right Rev. Paul Ojo, who gave the charge during the foundation-laying of the Chapel at Saint Peter’s Anglican Church, Ayetoro Gbede community to immortalise Mama Charity Malomo Irefin for her contributions to the cause of humanity, said her philanthropic gesture was still speaking loudly even after her death.
Ojo, represented by Venerable Gabriel Akande, said, “God wants the people to use their resources for His service and therefore charged Nigerians to emulate the late philanthropist by using their wealth to help the needy in society.”
Mama Malomo Irefin is the mother of General Olu Irefin, a former General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Port Harcourt, Rivers state.
Earlier, one of the children of the deceased, Mr. Olayemi Irefin, said the re-naming of the Chapel after their mother was the wish of his elder brother until his demise in December 2020.
“It is a welcome idea and we are following it with the spirit of keeping my brother’s wish alive because this is one of the things he would have been willing to live for if he was alive.
“So, we are doing it with the zeal that he is there and that is one of the ways I think we can represent his interest and we are happy about it. We appreciate the Church of Nigeria for the opportunity to name the Chapel after our mother,” he said.
A community leader in Ayetoro Gbede, Pastor Dayo Akanmode, in a remark, said the move was a welcome development, noting that Mama Irefin was an accomplished nurse and community leader who used her wealth and profession to assist the less privileged in the community.
