Doctor, nurse arrested over patients’ death

The Ogun state Police Command has arrested a medical doctor, Olawale Raji, and a staff nurse working with him, over the death of one Aminat Atisola, who reportedly contracted them for an abortion.
The incident was reported to have happened on Thursday, at an undisclosed area in Ota Area of the State.
A press statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the state, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the doctor, who is practising at a private hospital in the town with his accomplice, performed the criminal act at the victim’s house.
The spokesperson said their followed a complaint by the sister of the deceased, Bose Kazeem, at the Onipanu Police Division, stating that her sister died following complications that arose as a result of abortion of a two-month old pregnancy.
The deceased was said to have died while she was being taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, for attention following the complications.
Her remains had been deposited at the General Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
The PPRO said the Commissioner of Police in charge of the state, CP Ahmed iliyasu, had directed that the suspects be transferred to Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for proper investigation and prosecution.
He said the Police boss equally warned that abortion remains an unlawful act and whoever is caught engaging in it, without medical justification, would have the law to contend with.
