Don commends FG intervention on teachers’ welfare

The Director institute of Education, Nasarawa State University, Professor Orame Patrick Saurayi Alaku has commended the recent federal government intervention on teachers’ welfare, saying it would go a long way to encouraging commitment and the improvement of primary education sector.Alaku noted that teachers have been neglected for long in the country therefore,  an intervention will instill confidence in teachers and make them work hard to improve the education sector. He urged the government to show more commitment and responsibility in fulfilling the promises made to workers to reduce the number and frequency of strikes in the country.

The senior lecturer stated that workers cannot be blamed for embarking on strikes because government usually goes to the negotiating table to discuss with workers without the least intention to fulfill its promises.

Alaku said Nasarawa State University has made serious efforts to train teachers even as he commended the leadership qualities of the vice chancellor of the university. He said the primary schools are the foundation of education sector pointing out that except the nation gets it right at that level, the development of education might be adversely affected.

The professor urged governments to take a more critical assessment of teachers condition of service, including university lecturers who have not been paid for several months saying: “It is demoralizing when you expect your salary at the end of the month and it does not come for whatever reasons.”
