The Chairman, Governing Board of the Nigeria National Merit Award (NNMA), Professor Shekarau Yakubu Aku, has commended Professor Ebiegberi Joe Alagoa for his contributions toward the development of Nigeria’s educational sector.

Professor Alagoa gave the commendation in Lagos while delivering a speech at the 3rd NNMA held at the University of Lagos recently.

He described Alagoa as an achiever whose contributions to national education sector has no doubt been a radical force of transformation and enlightenment, noting that the renowned historian and founder of Onyoma research publications deserves commendations for his faith in the education system.

The chairman urged Nigerians to appreciate the place of the Nigeria National Merit Award and its laureates in national development, and reaffirmed the commitment of the governing board towards generating the needed innovations for nurturing the evolving democratic culture.

He said the award winners’ lecture was aimed at providing first hand insights into issues the laureates of the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM) consider crucial to national development.

“The recipients of NNOM award are people who have made outstanding and valuable contributions to national and global attainments in all the fields of human endeavours,” he added.

Speaking on the lecture titled; “Nigeria in History: Lifting Burdens, Learning Lessons,” Professor Alagoa attributed the country’s journey so far to the mentorship received from the likes of Professor Onwuka Dike, Professor Biobaku, Professor Ade Ajayi and many others.

He said: “Beyond lifting the numerous burdens that our history of poor governance and lack of purpose and probity has laid on the national conscience, Nigeria must learn the lessons that its history dictates it must learn to make progress in the future.”

He added that the story of Nigeria must focus on the identification of the burden created by Nigerians, and the lessons learnt to lift them from our national conscience and destiny.
