A nongovernmental organisation, Accountability Lab Nigeria (ALN), has urged civil servants to eschew the temptation of being used as instrument of corrupt practices in their establishments.
The programme manager of ALN, Mrs Ehi Idaku, gave the admonition Monday during a workshop on Integrity and Accountability in Leadership held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state capital.
She said the organisation, partnering with Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offense Commission (ICPC) and Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) have tried to wage war against corruption for the past five years.
Idaku noted that if crime continues to thrive in the country, the nation may collapse beyond imagination, adding that all citizens must accept the blame of being corrupt so that everybody can unanimously tame it.
She noted that the organisation was out to create current and future leaders with high level of integrity and sincerity of purpose.
She said for public servants to improve accountability processes in the Niger Delta region, they must be committed and transparent in information availability.
“Citizens, particularly, civil servants must live beyond the temptation of being used as instrument to execute corrupt practices.
“Be transparent in information availability, be committed in whatever you are doing, sincerity, strong accountability in policy making, result oriented, responsiveness, strong accountability in policy making, rendering selfless services,” she said.
The organisation further urged them to create and facilitate a lesson sharing and problem solving approach to help narratives around natural resources and the extractive industries through living exemplary lifestyles, improving budget preparation.
She added that project budgeting should be detailed and made public as well as sharing positive message of hope that can change the current narratives.
On her part, one of the resource persons, Mrs Justina Ogumelen, also advised the citizens to consider their conscience as a tracker in doing what they know is right, adding that the benefits of integrity last longer.
