Don’t cause another civil war, NFVCB warns Nollywood

The Nigeria Film and Video Censorship Board (NFVCB) at an interactive forum organised by the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) with relevant stakeholders in the Nigerian entertainment industry over the week warned Nollywood film producers against churning out movies capable of inciting civil war.

NFVCB’s Director of Operations, Cornel Ayim, disclosed that most people feel NFVCB bans contents for no good cause, but the body puts some vital factors into consideration before passing the works as fit for public consumption.
He stated that most movie producers like to cash in on real life events which they often misrepresent especially by exaggeration, and that there are 27 criteria NFVCB considers before a film can pass; some of which are “educational value, entertainment value, it must not glorify violence, it must not have potential to racial discrimination, religious discrimination or incite public disorder and disunity of Nigerians.”

NFVCB said many producers, for instance, have over the time made efforts to release movies showcasing the Boko Haram insurgency in Northern Nigeria and the recent APO-six killings, which the body has banned. These movies, he claimed, are capable of inciting some ethnic and religious group against one another leading to a civil war.
