Double registration: APGA applies to join in suit against Obiano

All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) yesterday filed an application before Justice A.R. Mohammed of the Federal High Court Abuja, seeking to be joined in the suit instituted against Anambra state governor-elect, Chief Willie Obiano, over allegation of double registration.

In the suit, the plaintiffs, Ugochukwu Ikegwuonu and Kenneth Moneke are contending that the voter’s card Obiano tendered before his party (APGA) for which he was allowed to participate in the party’s screening exercise ahead of the November 16, 2103, Anambra state governorship poll, which he eventually won was not the same as the one he submitted to INEC.
Other parties in the suit are Chief Obiano, 1st defendant, being represented by Onyechi Ikpeazu SAN, while the Independent National Electoral Commission, the 2nd respondent is represented by Ibrahim Bawa.

At a resumed sitting, P.I Ikwueto, who announced appearance for APGA, said he had an application dated February 21, 2014 but filed on the 25th, which sought an order of the court to be joined in the suit.

However, counsel to the plaintiffs, Joe Gadzama, said he was not opposed to the application, and observed that the party seeking to be joined “is the political platform of the 1st defendant, and the court without my comment has the power to join it (APGA) in the suit. I have been served with the said application.”

According to Ikegwuonu, the Voter’s Identification Number (VIN) on the first one is 90F5815E7D3738200332 and that on the second one is 90F5B12B01296204172.
The plaintiffs had prayed the court to determine whether by his alleged conduct, Obiano was still qualified to vie the election by virtue of the provisions of Sections 12(2), 16(2)(3) and 31(5) of the Electoral Act, amongst other reliefs.
