Ebonyi achieved 100 percent education budget in 2019 – UBEC chairman

Ebonyi state government said it has implemented 100 percent of the budget estimate in 2019 for the educational sector.

The state chairman of the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEC), Hyacinth Ikpor disclosed this in his office while speaking with Blueprint in Abakaliki.

Mr Ikpo who  said  the state before  inception of the current  administration  could not access United Nations Educational Fund, revealed that the state is now up to date in payment of counterpart  fund, and now access UN funds which enables it embark on educational developments.

He said: “Yes I can compare it, there is an increase in 2020 fiscal budget against 2019, an increase of about 5 percent.

“In 2019 we accessed all our capital projects, the state government was able to pay all the counterpart funds to Universal Basic Education Commission UBEC, based on which UBEC paid and send their matching grant to Ebonyi state.

 He commended the present government for assisting the board to achieve a lot in 2019 through steady payment of counterpart funds.

“From 2013 till date Ebonyi state has been lagging behind before now, in the past government the state was not able to accessing the United Nations Education Funds, because we were not able to pay our counterparts fund and since we were not able to pay, the Federal government did not release. So for the four years we did not pay.

“Thank God the Governor that has passion for education came in and paid the arrears of these years. That’s why you see the development taken place in education in the state. We are now up to date in terms of paying counterpart funds” he said.
