Ebonyi commissioner installs 18 solar street lights in Afikpo North

Following rising insecurity in states across the country and protracted power supply issues affecting Afikpo North local government area, the Ebonyi state Commissioner for Project Monitoring and Evaluation, Chief Oluchukwu Ukie Ezeali, has installed 18 solar street lights in different communities in his constituency.

Speaking with our reporter on Tuesday, Ezeali said his intention is to make sure that communities in his ward are not in darkness, “while the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and other concerned authorities continue working towards full restoration of power supply to Afikpo North, to complement the efforts of the state governor, Engr. David Nweze Umahi.”

He said: “It is said that charity begins at home. With Mgbom, Enohia Itim and Kpoghirikpo done and dusted, Amuro and Enohia Nkalu will soon be added to the project of lighting up Afikpo with solar street lights, while we wait for EEDC and concerned authorities to permanently fix the power supply issues affecting Afikpo North and the entire Ebonyi South. In fact, it is operation ‘let there be light’ in the whole communities making up Itim ward.

“Recall that I donated 12 of these solar street lights in December 2020, with a promise to do more. Today, I have installed another 6, cutting across Enohia Itim, Kpoghirikpo and Amauzu Mgbom.

“By the special grace of God, before the end of this year, Enohia Nkalu and Amuro will also witness the installation of solar street lights; to complete full lighting of the entire communities within my ward. The reason for the installation is basically to ease the life of residents and to encourage commercial activities.

“Apart from road side traders closing early, because of darkness, you can agree with me that the issue of insecurity is escalating in Nigeria and I believe we can’t wait for it to get to Afikpo before taking precautionary measures.”
