Ebonyi rector seeks amendments of Polytechnic Acts

The rector of Federal Polytechnic Uwanna Afikpo, Dr. Ogbonnia Ibe-Enwo at the weekend called on government to make polytechnic education more attractive for prospective students.

He also recommended amendment of the Federal Polytechnic Act in other to enable them award degrees which he said would reduce the rush to universities.

Mr Ibe-Enwo who stated this during the 38th matriculation of the institution in which 7,159 students were matriculated further noted that the objective of polytechnic education was to enable the country to join the comity of technologically advanced nations of the world and promote youth empowerment through practical skills acquisition for national development.

“There is a growing clamour, in accordance with global practice, for existing polytechnics and Technological Institutions to be empowered to award Bachelor of Technology as well as  higher degrees while maintaining their core mandate of providing courses of instruction and practical training in science, Technology and Engineering for the growth and development of the Nigerian economy.

“In this regard, to make polytechnic education more attractive to Nigerian Youths, I wish to recommend the amendment of the Federal Polytechnic Act to enable Polytechnics to become degree-awarding institutions while their core mandate remains.

“This measure will make polytechnic education more attractive to Nigerian youths and stem the influx of candidates to the Universities in order to obtain degrees in their field of studies”, he said.
