Ebonyi: Security expert calls for speed limit, caution signs on highway

A member of the Neighborhood watch, Mr Raphel Anyigor has called for a road sign indicating speed limit along Enugu-Abakaliki express way.

Neighbourhood watch is an internal security outfit owned by Ebonyi state government

Anyigor said speed limit signs would help motorists know of the new speed limit on the road.

Mr Anyigor who is one of the leaders of the state security outfit while speaking to Blueprint Correspondent in Abakaliki at the weekend said the speed limit nearly claimed lives of three individuals Thursday night.

He said,”This speed limit is good but if no caution sign is given within some distance of both sides of the road, it would cause more harm to motorists.

“In cause of my duty recently, I was privileged to save three persons who had accident with their motorcycles and sustained varying degrees of injuries. One of them is a Police inspector who was going home around 2:22am, I found him laying unconscious on the road.

“Thank God I knew him and I had to make necessary contacts to take him to hospital.

“Also a luxurious bus coming from Enugu axis jumped the speed limit in a bid to slow down because the driver said he did not notice the bump on time. It affected the bus and almost killed a police man with the Safer High way Patrol team.

Mr Anyigor however commended the state Governor Engineer David Umahi for the initiative of putting speed limit on some of the roads and said it would help curtail the number of road accident on that axis.

“I am thanking the state government for this speed limit, this part of the road alone has claimed many lives. Last Saturday, almost five lives were lost in accidents. So many accidents have also happened on this G-hotel axis.

“Governor David Umahi has really done well by this initiative but I want the ministry in charge of road maintenance to heed my calls.

“I have also reported this to the Special adviser to the Governor on Internal Security and Utility and also to our security platform,” he said.
