Ebonyi: Vehicle loses control, rams into restaurant, kills 1, injures 2 in Afikpo

The relatively peaceful community of Amuro, in Afikpo North local government area of Ebonyi state, was thrown into mourning on Saturday, May 11, 2019 as a driver of a Nissan Pathfinder Jeep reportedly lost control of the vehicle and ran into a restaurant situated along the road, killing one and injuring two customers.

According to a resident, who gave his name as Otu Obiahu, the accident happened along the popularly Amuro-Eke market road.

He said the Jeep skipped off the main road, jumped over drainage system and hit three people in front of a restaurant, close to Ecobank.

Obiahu said the Jeep, after knocking down the three victims, went further to uproot a sign post, the fence of a nearby church before running into the premises.

The vehicle was heading for the church hall when it was eventually stopped by an orange tree in the compound.

He stated that the driver of the Jeep, who never sustained any injury, reportedly alighted hastily from the car and took to his heels before people could gather, even as the windscreen and mirrors of the vehicle were shattered.

“No one could say precisely the actual cause of the accident. However, some have attributed it to over speeding, brake failure or some kind of spiritual manipulations.

“The body of the dead victim, who owned an aluminum shop at Amuro, very close to the scene of the accident, had been deposited in the mortuary, while the remaining two are now receiving intensive medical care in the hospital,” he said.
