Edo: APC ignores Oshiomhole, Ize-Iyamu, congratulates Obaseki

Despite suffering a defeat at the poll, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Monday evening described the outcome of the September 19 Edo State Governorship election as a victory for democracy.

The party’s candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu lost to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Governor Godwin Obaseki in a keenly contested election.

The party in a statement signed by the Chairman Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary National Convention Planning Committee ( CENCPC), Governor Mai Mala Buni dated September 21, 2020 congratulated the winner of the election, Governor Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The statement titled, “Edo State Governorship Election: Victory for Democracy”, the ruling party noted the “conduct of the election and its outcome represent victory for Nigeria’s democracy.”

According to the party, “the September 19, 2020 Edo State Governorship election is over, the winner has been declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the person of the Mr. Godwin Obaseki, candidate of the People Democratic Party (PDP). We hereby congratulate the winner of the election, the people of Edo State and all Nigerians. The peaceful conduct of the election and its outcome represent victory for Nigeria’s democracy.”

The party said it joined President Muhammadu Buhari, who had on Sunday congratulated the winner of the election, to affirm ‘‘commitment to free and fair elections’’ in order to strengthen ‘the foundation for our political and moral authority’.
“We commend INEC, our security agencies and all political parties that contested the election for the successful conduct of the election. As a governing party, we will take every step necessary to support the Federal Government to consolidate all the gains achieved.”

The ruling party commended the party’s flag bearer, Pastor Ize-Iyamu for his tenacity and leadership, it also applauded party leaders in the state, especially, the immediate past National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomole for demonstrating unwavering support for the party and it’s candidate by remaining faithful and working tirelessly during campaigns and the election, in the face of all the challenges.

It then appealed to party members to be strengthened by the outcome of the election and unite in order to correct all the problems that worked against the party and it’s candidate in the just concluded election.

“Let us unite to move our democracy for forward. We must put an end to the era when electoral contest become warfare. We urge our candidate and all our members to join us in congratulating Mr. Godwin Obaseki and the PDP, being the declared winner of the election.”

The party then vowed to address all the lapses recorded in the Edo election with a view to winning the October 10 Ondo State Governorship Election.
“Our attention must now shift to Ondo State and ensure that we win the October 10, 2020 election. September 19, 2020 Edo election should present a new watershed. We will work hard to win the Ondo election,” the party vowed.
