A Benin city-based group, Talakawa’s Parliament and Stakeholders of Peace has handed out a 7-day ultimatum to the Edo state police command to fish out the killers of a community leader of Oke-Oroma, Pa Monday Okhuelegbe and two others who were allegedly murdered by hoodlums last February.
The group said it would commence a sustained street protest if the operatives fail to act by bringing the perpetrators to book.
The victims were reportedly murdered over a land dispute between Oko-Oroma and Amagba community and the octogenarian’s body taken away.
Public Relations Officer of the Talakawa’s Parliament, Comrade Aigbogun Emmanuel who addressed journalists on behalf of the groups gave the names of other victims as Saturday Oyemwenmhinmina and Monday Ibrahim respectively.
Emmanuel expressed concern that despite series of petition to the Edo state police commissioner, Jemita Lawal to intimating him of persons who masterminded the deaths and destruction of properties in Oko-Oroma community, “the command has failed to make a single arrest.”
He said, “As we speak, the state government has not also come out to condemn the killings and destruction of property in the community, and this dastardly act was spare-headed by individuals from neigbouring Amagba community.”
Coordinator of the group, Maxist Kola Edokpayi said: “The nonchalant attitude of those saddled with the responsibility of safeguarding lives and property of citizens of the state may compel us to take to the streets to protest because injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere.”
Also speaking, daughter of the late octogenarian, Mrs. Monday Enibokun appealed to concerned authorities to help unravel the miseries surrounding the sudden death and disappearance of her father’s remains.
The state police spokesman, Chidi Nwabuzor could not be reached for comment at the time of filling this report.
