Edo/Ondo polls: Steer clear of rigging, CUPP warns politicians

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has warned political “buccaneers masquerading as democrats” to steer clear of Edo and Ondo states elections.

The Chairman, Contact and Mobilization Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), Rev Olusegun Peters, stated this in Abuja on Wednesday at the meeting of sub-committee on Contact and Mobilization.

He said any attempt to manipulate the forthcoming governorship elections will be strongly opposed, resisted and repelled.

According to him, having seen the blatant misrule of the All Progressives Congress government at all levels, Nigerians can’t wait to vote them out of power.

He assured that CUPP will carry out grassroots campaigns in accordance with COVID-19 guidelines to ensure the victory of its candidates in the upcoming gubernatorial polls, urging the people to turnout en masse to vote for competent, visionary and purposeful leaders who will provide dividends of democracy not carnage.

“The election was a slap on the nation’s democratic process, a giant step backward in our collective efforts in building a strong, virile, progressive, united democratic nation.

“While the Coalition of United Political Parties campaigned and prepared for election, our opponent prepared for war, deployed Federal might and all its arsenal to capture power and robbed Nigerians of the mandates they freely gave to CUPP member parties in various elective positions.

“President Muhammadu Buhari on four occasions refused to sign the amended Electoral bill that would have guaranteed free and fair election adopting electronic voting system.

“Nigerians have seen the consequence of ruling with stolen mandates, impunity, flagrant abuse of power, oppression, intolerance, disobedience of orders of courts of competent jurisdictions, economic stagnation, corruption in high places, rubber stamp legislatures, executive recklessness, insecurity across the nation and confusion in government.

“The poor handling COVID-19 pandemic further worsen the sufferings of Nigerians.

“Indeed, the state of the nation is bad, very bad. As stakeholders in the political process, it is incumbent on us to come together, brainstorm and strategize with a view to moving the nation forward.

“Henceforth, it will be a monthly meeting of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) till 2023 general election,” he said .
