Edo Prison break: Police re-arrest 4 escaped convicts

The Nigeria Police, Monday, paraded four escaped inmates of the Oko Prison in Edo state, who escaped during the jail break following the #EndSARS protests.

Parading the suspects in Abuja the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, said the fugitives including a death row convict and an ex-soldier were arrested in Kaduna, where they had resorted to armed robbery and car snatching.

The spokesperson said they were arrested by the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and Special Tactical Squad (STS) of the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB), Abuja.

According to him, the four convicts: Adebayo Opeyemi, an ex-soldier; Onorede Benjamin, who is on death row; Peter Felix Osas; and Alhaji Hudu Musa; colluded with others, on bail, to continue perpetuating criminality.

Mba said Benjamin, who was the de facto leader of the new gang, snatched a vehicle 30 minutes after he escaped and drove to Kaduna, where he sold the car with the help of Musa who had nine months left off his prison term before he escaped.

The spokesperson, who said 34 suspects including a woman were arrested for armed robbery, car theft, unlawful possession and illegal dealing of weapons among others, disclosed that eight cars, eight AK-47 rifles and other assorted weapons were recovered from the suspects.

He urged members of the public to report any information about the escaped convicts to the Police, pointing out that they posed a great risk to the society as they usually return to repeat their offences or even worse crimes.

Speaking to journalists, Benjamin admitted to have snatched a car 30 minutes after escaping from prison but subsequently sold the car to a contact in Niger Republic.
