Edo teachers begin indefinite strike over minimum wage tomorrow

Primary school teachers under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Edo state will tomorrow begin indefinite strike over non implementation of N25, 000 minimum wage.
The teachers said the minimum wage was approved by the state government for all workers in the state in May 2016.
The industrial action, according to a statement issued by the union yesterday, is sequel to the refusal of Edo state government to address its demands, after the expiration of a 21 day ultimatum.
In the communiqué , dated September 6 and signed by Pius Oaikhena Okhueleigbe and Moni Mike Modesty Itua, chairman and acting secretary, said the union had also magnanimously given another seven-day extension.
The NUT noted with dissatisfaction, the nonresolution of any of the issues that gave rise to the 21-day ultimatum it handed to the state government.
Other demands of the teachers include the financial implementation of the 2013 to 2015 primary school teachers’ promotion as approved by the state government with the arrears of last January to July inclusive.
The union is also asking for immediate provision of subvention funds to both primary and secondary schools across the state.
According to the NUT, public school teachers have been using their merger salaries to, provide instructional materials like chalk, markers, diaries, registers amongst others for teaching and learning in schools since 2012.
Reacting to the union’s strike threat, the chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Joan Osa Oviawe said the state government is in discussion with the teachers to avert the strike.
