Edo teachers strike not political, NUT tells Obaseki

The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Edo state, Wednesday, said the 19-day strike action it recently suspended was not politically motivated; and cautioned the government against victimisation of members.

The union stated this in reaction to statement credited to Governor Godwin Obaseki to the effects that the NUT leadership is playing politics with the lives of Edo children, and wants to derail the state government’s educational programmes.

In a communiqué  issued at the end of an enlarged  state wing of the executive council meeting of the union, the NUT denied the allegations.
The communique was signed by Pius Okhueleigbe, state chairman,  Moni Mike, the assistant secretary general and three others.

According to the union, “the state government was given eight weeks to attend to the demands of teachers.
“And the strike was the last resort following the failure of the government to meet teachers demands.”
