Edo varsity sacks 13 over extortion, sexual harassment

The management of Edo state-owned Ambrose Ali University (AAU), has dismissed 13 staff for alleged offences ranging from falsified age, fraud, misconduct, extortion and sexual harassment.

Vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Asomwan Sunny Adagbonyin, said the decision to terminate the appointment of the erring staff was reached following the recommendations of the institution’s disciplinary committee which find them guilty of the offences.

Adagbonyin stated this while presenting the committee’s report to members of AAU Special Intervention Team (SIT) Monday.

The VC said the disciplinary committee had given the affected staff fair hearing and recommended that “the criminal aspect of the disengage staff offence should be reported to security operatives.”

He added that a lecturer and an associate professor were dismissed for collecting unapproved levy from students.

Prof. Adagbonyin said the lecturer who was the head of nursing science was recommended for sack after he was found guilty of extorting students of N32,000 and N52,000 respectively.

The VC stated that a lecturer who was indicted for sexual harassment was also dismissed.

He said: “The lecturer had claimed to have only make advances, but he went to the said girl’s church to plead for forgiveness.

“The victims were protected and reassigned to another lecturer.”
