Education budget: Implement UNESCO recommendation, don tells Buhari

The coordinator, Fidel Polytechnic, Gboko, Abuja campus, Hon Gbudu Adeyoungu Gbudu has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to consider the proposal of 26 per cent budgetary allocation to education as recommended by the United Nations Educational Scientific and cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

He made the appeal in an interview with journalists in the institution’s study centre in Karu LGA of Nasarawa state Tuesday.

Gbudu a former councillor, reiterated that some countries have already taken  giant steps to solve education problem by implementing the United Nations recommendation.

He said that Ghana’s budgetary allocation to education is 10 per cent;  India 20 per cent, while advanced  countries like USA, France and Germany have made education compulsory for all citizens,  so why should Nigeria that calls herself Giant of Africa because of  high population density,  will allocate only seven percent of national budget to education?

He lamented that the delay in restructuring education sector and giving it a facelift has negative effects in the society. These effects manifest in kidnapping, political thuggery, robbery and other vices.

Gbudu further appealed to Buhari to consider raising allocation to education sector as proposed by the education minister.

“I keenly study the leadership policy of President Buhari on education.  If the 26 per cent is approved, Nigeria will head to great achievement,” He stated.

He disclosed that scrapping of the dichotomy between HND and university degree has yielded positive result.

Gbudu also appealed to the federal government to make education at all levels compulsory to all citizens, adding that education is the weapon with which to transform an individual towards embracing peace by creating a violence-free society.

The Benue state born lecturer and grassroots politician vowed to make education his cardinal objective if given an opportunity to hold any political office, especially as chairman of a local government council.
