EFCC Gombe zonal office convicts 41 in 4 months

The North-east zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) said it has secured the conviction of 41 corruption related cases out of the 81 petitions it received from January to date.

Head of operations of the zonal office, Mr. Michiel Wetkas , stated this on  Monday while briefing newsmen in Gombe.

According to him, between Januarys to March 2019, the zonal office received 81 petitions out of which 37 were successfully convicted in court and the remaining 4 were convicted in April 2019

He assured that the Commission would continue to work hard in the fight against corruption.

He said the Agency also recovered over 55 million naira cash, bank draft and properties worth 18.8 million naira within January and March 2019.

Mr. Wetkas added that during the 2019 general election, 8 people were arrested and convicted including local government council chairman and councillor for vote buying.

He explained further that before the 2019 election, the Commission has embarked on the sensitisation of the public on the need for people to elect good leaders that will translate to good governance in the Nigerian society.

“We must be seen to be moving forward not backward. All stakeholders must come together in the cause of this fight which is for the common good of all”.

“There are a lot needed to be done because we have completely lost our value system in Nigeria thus compromising a lot of things in a negative way,” he said.
