EHORECON- Poor sanitation claim 800 children globally

The Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON), Acting Register, Dr. Baba Yakubu Mohammed on Thursday stated that the mortality rate most specially children under 5 is 800 globally due to poor sanitation.

He made this known during the 2020 world toilet Day commemoration at the Chief of Maje’s palace in Jabi, Abuja.

Mohammed added that the awareness campaign has been taken to the grassroots, so that the target of achieving open defecation by 2025 is achievable.

“The council level under the leadership of the Minister of Environment, Dr. Mohammad Mahmood Abubakar, is going to be a huge investment sanitation infrastructure in the country because of the economy valve of providing the sanitation infrastructure in our community.

He explained that its an opportunity to show case the guideline that is going to be issued by the Minister on private sector participation in the provision sustainable sanitation infrastructure.

“The private sector should come and invest in the provision of toilet because shit business is a serious business”.

He called on the state government to employ the environmental  health officers, so that they can police the environment

“His words: the environmental health officers while working in the community has the powers and the privileges of police officers. ” it can enter into any premises for the purposes of inspection within reasonable hours without going with a warrant.

Mohammed said the state government should know that nobody in the community has the powers to enforce the issue on legislature, has it pertain to sanitation but environmental health officers.
