Electricity peaks at 3,600mw – NERC

The Chairman, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Sam Amadi, has pegged the current electricity generation in the country at 3,600 megawatts (mw).

Amadi disclosed this on a Radio programme: ‘Political Platform,’ monitored in Abuja.
He said he anticipated further increase in the power generation after the current repairs on the vandalised lines are fully restored.
He also said more megawatts were being expected from the NIPPs, pleading with Nigerians to be patient with government and the new owners of electricity.

He expressed confidence that the situation would be much better by the end of the year.
He attributed current challenges of electricity in the country to gas constraint, he however disclosed that the federal government was doing everything possible to address the situation.
He said some plants had been completed but could not be put to use because of gas constraint, assuring a speedy resolution through the gas agreement.

He expressed concerned over the activities of saboteurs and vandals of electricity infrastructure, saying that the act was capable of frustrating government’s efforts in ensuring stable power supply in the country.
He appealed well-meaning Nigerians to guard government’s facilities against vandalism, saying the acts lead to retrogression in the efforts so far made in the power sector.
On metering, he said consumers would be encouraged to pay the fixed price so as to make the market attractive for investors, believing they would be able to recoup their money once investment was made.
