Embrace entrepreneurial spirit to fight poverty – GAWON

Founder of Gantis Aid for Widows, Orphans and the Needy (GAWON), a non-governmental organisation, has urged people of Kaduna state to imbibe the spirit of entrepreneurship in order to fight poverty.

Founder of GAWON, Elder Shemang, made the appeal at the headquarters of the NGO in Biniki, Kaura local government area of Kaduna state while speaking to newsmen at the weekend.

He said Nigeria is blessed with abundant material human resources, saying what was lacking is the will-power to harmonise the resources for the good of all.

Taking them round some of the facilities of the organisation, Shemang revealed that the body has a work force of 70 staff and 400 volunteers, adding that the people in the grassroots were being assisted to be self-reliant in different trades.

He said the organsiation was established out of concern for the teeming widows and orphans in the society, adding that the NGO has 14 hectares of ginger, 7 hectares of rice and 8 HECTRES of maize, which would be used for distribution to beneficiaries after harvest for use during the next cropping season under the proramme.

Shemang added that the NGO’s activities included education and skill mentoring capacity building, income generating activities, agriculture, child protection, health care support services, advocacy and community development.
