Empowerment: Widows get skill acquisition in Yobe

A human right advocator, Christian Solidarity Worldwide Nigeria (CSW) supported by Voice of the Martyrs (VOM), Canada has empowered capacity of 33 widows whose husbands were slain by the Boko Haram insurgents in Yobe state.

The empowerment programme which came through a five day extensive skills acquisition training; was aimed at assisting them to be self reliant and dependent.

In her marks at the closing ceremony, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) in Nigeria, Mrs. Timah Agirah, said as result of laziness many widows have became beggars moving round from place to place seeking for assistance.

She further told Blueprint that, after rigorous training, the 33
widows were not only empowered with the training but given starter packs inorder to immediately commence their businesses.

He pleads with the organization to render more training in the state so as to reduce the succour of the widows in feeding their children and training them in schools.

In his goodwill message, Ishaku Garba the state Coordinator, said the training which is the first of its kind in the state had targeted widows who were affected directly by the Boko Haram insurgency.

The CAN chairman who spoke through his Assistant Secretary, Rev. Barnabas Nina, thanked the organization for touching the lives of the widows and also challenged all other Christians to emulate the gesture.

Nine of the widows were trained in tailoring and were given sewing machine each, the eight trained in grinding; were given grinding machine each, while the other sixteen trained in soap making and other hygiene liquid making were also given starter packs each.

Investigations by Blueprint indicate the widows were cut across the local government councils of the state.
