Encourage peasant farmers

Agriculture sector accounts for 40% of the Nigeria’s GDP and employs roughly 70% of the working population (CIA, 2012). The
major economic sector in the rural areas, where over 50% of the population resides, is agriculture. But, there is an
increasing need for food, and the cost is also a major concern; thus, if
land cultivation were given serious consideration, both the many food
issues and economic difficulties would be resolved. However, there are a number of reasons why people do not invest in farms,
contributing to their low productivity.

In order to satisfy themselves and for them to satisfy consumers and
help to reduce various concerns of high food prices, it is urgent for
government to pay serious attention to peasant farmers and encourage
them to produce more while assisting them to deal with issues
such as soil erosion, biodiversity, new agricultural technologies, and
staying against the resilience of the global economic factors.

It is imperative that peasant farmers learn about all agricultural practices so they can become food producers for the growing
population, which will increase employment opportunities across
board. Government should also implement new land reforms that would increase food production on the land, allowing
peasant farmers to grow more crops per acre, use raised beds for their
planting, and adopt tolerant varieties.
