#Endsars: Blocking of 3 linked websites, human rights’ violation – Media Rights

A media advocacy group, Media Rights Agenda (MRA), has condemned the blocking of three websites associated with #EndSARS protests in Nigeria.

MRA in a statement issued by its Communication Officer, Idowu Adewale, on Tuesday, described it as a brazen and unjustifiable violation of the right to freedom of expression of the operators of the websites.

According to the group, three websites; www.feministcoalition2020.comwww.endsars.com, and www.radioisiaq.com, have been inaccessible from Nigeria in the last few days but were accessible from other countries, alleging that they were only blocked in Nigeria.

The statement quoted the Head of MRA’s Legal Department, Ms Chioma Nwaodike, as saying that the blocking of the websites was illegal and a clear violation of the norms and standards established under international human rights law for the application of any limitation on the right to freedom of expression.

She argued that the blocking of the websites was not authorized by any law in Nigeria, and accused the Federal Government of highhandedness.

Nwaodike called on the FG to uphold its international commitments as a state party to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and urged it to follow due process of the law.
