#ENDSARS protests: Ebonyi youths mobilise against hoodlums

Youths loyal to the Ebonyi state government have mobilised themselves, armed with cutlasses, to defend the state capital against hoodlums, capitalising on the #EndSARS protests rocking the country to wreak havoc.

It could be recalled that hoodlums allegedly invaded the state Wednesday and destroyed three police stations, vehicles and other public and private properties in the guise of #EndSARS protest.

The destruction led the state governor, David Nweze Umahi, to declare 24-hour curfew in the state.

Also, there was stampede in Afikpo North local government area of the state as markets and shops were hurriedly shut Thursday morning when residents sighted heavily armed security agents patrolling the town in armoured vehicles, even as parents hurriedly evacuated their wards from schools.

However, the streets of Abakaliki were Thursday afternoon taken over by cutlass-wielding youths, chanting war songs.

The youths, many of whom moved about in vans and on foot, challenged hoodlums to “come back or show up and be cut to pieces.”

One of the youths, Peter Nwangele, told Blueprint in a phone interview: “We are not against genuine #EndSARS protests. What we are against is arson, destruction of public and private properties, looting, harassment, rape, banditry and other forms of criminality being perpetrated by hoodlums from other states masquerading as #EndSARS protesters.”
