The United Progressive Party (UPP) has urged the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to engage the opposition parties more constructively in the interest of Nigeria.
The UPP said instead of resorting to abusive name-calling of those that hold contrary views on national matters and deploying malicious propaganda, the APC should listen to the yearnings of Nigerians and attend to their needs.
Speaking in a congratulatory message to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for successfully conducting its national convention that produced the new leadership of the party, the UPP advised the ruling party to focus on good governance and not be antagonistic at every suggestion.
A statement signed by the UPP national chairman, Dr. Chekwas Okorie, praised the PDP for conducting its elective congress that brought on board the newly elected national officers of the party led by Prince Uche Secondus.
The party said the success of the PDP convention is a new dawn in the country’s political process stressing that it is good for Nigeria’s democracy which is the yearning of Nigerians.
“We commend the PDP for conducting a successful elective National Convention. We expect the new leadership of the PDP to join hands with other credible opposition parties to raise the quality of opposition in Nigeria and deepen our democracy.
“In the same token, we seize this opportunity to advise the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to engage the opposition more constructively in the interest of our dear country, Nigeria and her citizens.
“Name-calling, acerbic remarks and malicious propaganda with the concomitant counter propaganda can only heat up the polity with its destabilizing impact on all facts of our national life.
“UPP will engage all registered political parties in robust encounter that will uplift our democratic process ahead of 2019 general election. It is a new dawn in the country’s political process”, the chairman said in a statement yesterday.
