The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Tuesday, disclosed that the enactment and adaptation of the Nigerian Codes and Standards will ensure a robust Engineering practice and provide solutions to the incessant failure of Engineering facilities and infrastructure in Nigeria.
The President of the council, Engr. Ali Rabiu, who said this at the 30th Engineering Assembly in Abuja, disclosed that it would also ameliorate the challenges and shape better opportunities for practitioners in the country.
The assembly, which had “Domestication and Development of Codes, Standards and Regulations as Panacea for Engineering Infrastructure Failures in Nigeria, ‘’ as its theme was organised by COREN.
He said: “It is our conviction that enacting and adaptation of Nigerian Codes and Standards will ensure a robust Engineering Practice and provide solutions to the incessant failure of Engineering facilities and infrastructure in Nigeria, particularly building structures. This will also ameliorate the challenges and shape better opportunities for practitioners for an enhanced future in the lives and economy of Nigerians’’.
Rabiu said that there was a need to ensure standards in the profession in view of recurring building collapse in the country.
Also, the Chairman of the 30th Engineering Assembly, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, said engineering played a vital role in contributing to every facet of lives in a country, hence the role of engineers and technicians could not be over-emphasised.
He, therefore, said that the enacting and adaptation of standard codes of engineering practice would ensure a robust engineering practice in the country.
He called on COREN to work hard to restore the apparent loss of confidence in the profession by checking the trend of failed projects in the country.
Afolabi, who is the Group Executive Chairman/Chief Executive Officer (CEO), frowned at the failed infrastructure and projects, and suggested that the council should look at the dominance of foreign firms in the construction industry.
In his keynote address, the Chief Executive Officer, Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Mr Babatunde Irukere, called on COREN to impose liability on engineers who engaged in unprofessional conduct.
