Enugu Assembly steps down ex governors’ pensions bill

Inundated by public outcry, the Enugu State House of Assembly Tuesday stepped down the proposed new pension bill for former governors and their deputies.

The bill which generated a lot of controversies was stepped down following a motion by the Leader of the House, Rt. Hon Ikechukwu Ezugwu who was alleged to have sponsored the bill.

In his motion to step down the Bill, Hon Ezugwu said the bill though not out of place, needs to be stepped down following the outcry of the masses which they must listen to as representatives of the people and emphasised on the need to consult widely.

The motion was seconded by Onyinye Ugwu, the deputy leader of the House.

In his speech, Speaker said there were lots of provisions in the bill that are not constitutional like; payment of salaries to spouses of former governors and their deputies.

Last, Thursday, the whole state and beyond was set agog following the bill that had passed a first reading and there were fears that it might be passed into law.

People took to their various social media platforms to vent their dissent to the bill which they saw as anti-people in a state where many pensioners, local government staffers and primary school teachers are dying for lack of pensions and gratuities while civil servants are yet to receive the minimum wage of N30,000.
