Enugu Fire Service tasks residents on outbreak alert

Zonal Commander of Enugu state Fire Service, Ogui Station, Mr. Ambrose Okwor, has urged the residents to promptly alert the organisation whenever there was fire outbreak rather than embarked on self-help.
Okwor gave the advice while addressing newsmen in Enugu yesterday.
“Self-help is one of the challenges we are facing in this job because when we get late call, at times before we get there, the fire would have done a lot of damage.
“Another thing is that motorists most often struggle with us along the way; they do not give us way when they see fire engines or hear the alarm from our truck. They do not care that there is life and properties in danger somewhere.”
Okwor noted that the Ogui fire station located at the state headquarters, controlled Ogbete Market, Timber Shed, Night Mile units and Nsukka station.
According to him, the state fire service responds quickly to emergencies and usually rushes to meet up with any fire incident.
“In terms of equipment, we are well-equipped compared to other state fire service as we have fourteen fire engines and two water tankers.
“Besides, we have saved properties worth billions of naira, while properties worth over N2.3 million have also been destroyed in fire outbreaks in the state.”
Okwor said one of the things that the cause fire outbreaks in people’s residents was that some people do not turn off their electrical appliances when they are not around.
“Some people leave their offices without switching of electrical appliances, so when there is power upsurge, the thing will spark and possibly lead to fire outbreaks.
“Another thing is the use of candles in some homes which is not friendly to people, as it causes fire outbreak. What we do in such places where houses are built in compact is that we use long host to get across to the fire site.”
He thanked the state government under the administration of Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for its support to the service since its inception.
He advised the residents to always call on the fire service whenever there was fire outbreak rather than relying on self-help.
