Enugu police detain judge over child abuse

Enugu State Police Command has announced the arrest and detention of a female magistrate in the state, and her husband, for child abuse.

A statement from the command yesterday said the arrest followed a petition against the magistrate and her husband for their alleged maltreatment of a nine-year-old girl from Ebonyi.

The statement was signed by the Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr Ebere Amaraizu.
It alleged that the couple abducted the girl in 2011 without the consent of her mother, a widow of Amuda, Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi.

It said the men of the Criminal Investigation Department rescued the girl from the couple at their home in Ibagwa Nike, Enugu East Local Government with bruises and multiple injuries on her body.
The statement said the girl’s mother, who told the police that her daughter was taken away without her consent, pleaded that justice be done in respect of the couple.

It said the victim also narrated her many years of painful and agonizing ordeal in the hands of the couple and how she became their “practical object to demonstrate torture at all times’’.

The statement also said the girl was kept hungry and beaten thoroughly by the magistrate and her husband, adding that the police have begun investigations into the matter.
Meanwhile, the statement said the girl had been released to her mother. (NAN)
