Enugu threatens to revoke Legacy Estate land over devt levy

The Enugu state Ministry of Housing has urged individuals who were allotted the state government’s compensatory plots of land in government owned estates to contribute for the infrastructure development of the estates by paying some stipulated levies.

To ensure that the Estate is developed, Enugu State Gov and the management of of the Ministry of Housing have decided that all those people given the compensatory plots should pay the sum of N2 million to enable the Ministry embark on aggressive infrastructure development of the estate to enhance the value of the properties.

However, Blueprint Weekend reliably gathered that in one of the estates, Legacy Estate, where about half of the 373 plots were given out as compensation to some individuals they were yet to pay any money paid into the government account.

It was also gathered that the agreement was that beneficiaries should develop the land within two years from the time the plots were allocated to them; however, the estate has not witnessed any reasonable change.

Similarly, those who bought land and paid direct to the government should pay the sum of N1 million as infrastructural development levy.

A source the ministry confirmed to our correspondent that plans were underway to revoke the contract agreement for beneficiaries within the Legacy Estate who fail to pay within the stipulated period of May 10th.

However, some of the owners of the property who spoke to on the development said they were never communicated either through electronic or print media, neither have they received any official mail from the ministry.

They called on the ministry to have a human face based on the hard economic situation of the country and pleaded for more time to enable them effect the payment.

Speaking on the development, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing, Mr. Obiora Onugu, maintained that there was no going back on the development agenda for the Estate.

“We have given enough time for the allotees to comply.  We made the announcements on radio, informing them of the need to pay for the infrastructure development of the Estate.  We may not extent the grace time any further,” the perm sec declared.
