Erosion: Why FG handed over commissioned projects to communities in FCT

The federal government recently addressed the devastating effects of erosion and flood even as it hands over some commissioned projects to communities in the FCT. HELEN OJI reports.

These communities had suffered a lot from erosion and flooding which has devastated the people living in those areas, especially the students of University of Abuja, because when there is heavy down pour, the students will not be able to go for lectures. Same thing applies to the people of the area.

This situation is not different from the people of Gurku communities in Nasarawa state where the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) stays and the people of Kuchiyako 1 District in Kuje Area Council, Abuja suffers same fate which has resulted in loss of lives and properties.

Care and Sustainability

The project was initiated through a directive by the federal government council to address the erosion and degradation in the communities, to improve the access road to Gurku Internally Displaced Person (IDP) camp in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa state, the Construction of Drainage Retaining Walls and Erosion Control at the University of Abuja and also the erosion and flood control at Kuchiyako 1district, Kuje Area Council Abuja. The commissioning and handing over of this projects to the communities is expected to achieve the dual purpose of enabling the host communities to take over and exercise ownership over the project, to ensure it’s care and sustainability.
