Ex-director seeks police protection over alleged threat to life

A retired director of the Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Kehinde Akintunde, has requested for police protection from one Martin Ugwu, whom he accused of threatening his life and cyber-bullying.
The former director, in a petition to the Inspector General of Police, acting IGP Ibrahim Idris, said Ugwu, who was dismissed from the Ministry of Health in June, 2015, for allegedly impersonating a medical doctor, had been hounding him since the latter was sacked from the civil service.
Akintunde, in the petition by his lawyer, Magnus Osita, dated August 24, 2016, accused Ugwu of posting fictitious stories against him on Facebook and writing unsubstantiated allegations to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
He alleged that he had been receiving threat calls and SMS from various GSM numbers reportedly belonging to Ugwu and one Durojaiye Adebayo, a staff of his former ministry, since November, 2015.
He appealed to the IG to protect him and his family members from being abducted or killed.
The petitioner said in one instance, Ugwu wrote a petition to the ICPC alleging that he (Akintunde) was mentally unstable, claiming  that his academic qualifications were fake.
Following Ugwu’s allegations, the ex-director, said that the ICPC investigated and cleared him of all the fictitious claims through a letter with reference number, ICPC/SIT/T.3/98/2016,  dated March 23,2016 and signed by Acting Head of Unit (SIT), Hassan H.M.
A copy of the letter of clearance made available to our correspondent, said that the ICPC had investigated the allegations against Akintunde and found that: “no infraction of the provisions of the ICPC Act, 2000 has so far been made in respect of the allegations raised and the case has as such been closed.”
Akintunde further said that the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) , had invited him for questioning based on another fictitious petition by Ugwu.
Ugwu could not be reached for reaction at the time of going to press as his phones were switched off and he did not respond to SMS on the issues.
